Using Referral Programs to Get a Good Job
Here is a dynamite secret strategy for getting into a firm through the backdoor - a backdoor that's provided and funded by the company itself! If you know anyone who works at a firm that’s advertising a job opening or if you know anyone who knows anyone who works there – try this. Call them at work, briefly introduce yourself and ask them if their firm has an “employee referral program”. Chances are they won’t know. Ask them if they would be kind enough to find out if such a program exists, as you will soon be applying for the opening and plan to land the job. You’d be pleased to let them recommend you and pick up the fat referral fee.
Some of the most generous such programs will pay several thousand dollars for such a referral while others pay only a hundred bucks or so. Either way you’re doing each other a favor and they will realize this immediately. Of course this call will throw the door open to a discussion of working conditions and even individual personalities. After you hang up they will do the research and find out the details for you. Even if the thing falls through and the firm has no such program, your call will be well received. And if you get the job and the deal goes through, you’ll start work with a natural ally in place - day one! That’s not a bad thing.
