Years ago employees were dedicated to their employers and employers returned the favor by standing by their employees even when long-term illness struck.

These days loyalty is dead or at least dying. It used to be that employees were expected to be loyal to their employer. But today the baseball model has taken over. This means that employees are free agents that rent their services to an employer on a temporary basis.  

You use the employer to give your career a boost and pay your bills. While your employer gets your best efforts during the period you’re in their employ.

 

But instead of assuming that you’re going to stay on board for decade after decade, today’s savvy employee recognizes that he or she may have to change jobs every three to five years if they want both their career and income to progress.
