Employer Reference Trick
Here’s a cute little stunt an employer may try. They may call one of your past bosses and leave a message with their secretary or on their Voicemail. The message will go something like this: “I’m calling for a job reference on Mr. Bob Smith. If he was an excellent employee, please call me back. If not please do not respond. Thank you, have a nice day.” Another tricky job reference tactic involves calling a former boss and asking for the usual reference. If no information is forthcoming they’ll ask for the names of former co-workers the caller might chat with. This can lead to candid conversations that are relatively free of the legal problems that often plague the usual more formal reference check.
